The work here is in a variety of media including oil, wax and charcoal. It has mainly been inspired by photographs taken of towns and villages around the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan. Carla visited this area first in 2003 during her art residency in Shimkent (see projects) and then again in 2005.

She was invited by the Kazakhstan Government to take part in another residency in 2008 to celebrate the 10th birthday of the Capital Astana.
